To Stephany
who LOVED clothes with upmarket labels.

Haute Couture   Liz

Oh, how I love it when I wear
Christian's fashions, clothes by Pierre!
How I revel in the fame
Bestowed by garments with their name!
With joy I give in to temptation
When clothing bears their appelation
And gaily hand across the cheque
To have their name tag at my neck!

But, oh, I wish the world were able
To see how chic the inner label
For the price I paid I've got no pride
And damn well want their name OUTSIDE!

“I Worried"     Mary Oliver

I worried a lot. Will the garden grow,
will the rivers flow in the right direction,
will the earth turn as it was taught,
and if not how shall

I correct it?

Was I right, was I wrong, will I be forgiven,

can I do better?

Will I ever be able to sing, even the sparrows

can do it and I am, well,

hopeless.

Is my eyesight fading or am I just imagining it,

am I going to get rheumatism,

lockjaw, dementia?

Finally I saw that worrying had come to nothing.

And gave it up. And took my old body

and went out into the morning,

and sang.

The Waltz   Geoff Page

Two couples walk a winter evening

half a block apart

the second brittle from the years

the first two at the start

The two who follow have agreed

they cannot quite object

to what the girl is laughing at

when nuzzled on the neck.

She has a lovely, soaring squeal

and neither needs it said

that these are two requited lovers

not long out of bed.

Not even drunk the youngsters now

attempt a little dance -

as if this life might just allow

some kind of second chance

where laughter and a long frisson

from earlobe to the toes

bring back a world where once we all

went naked in our clothes.

And this from John Donne
It's a bit TOO appropriate for the Corona crisis!
(thanks Shirley Newell)

No Man is an Island

No man is an island entire of itself; every man

is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;

if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe

is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as

well as any manner of thy friends or of thine

own were; any man’s death diminishes me,

because I am involved in mankind.

And therefore never send to know for whom

the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
